Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn at Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. When she was a young girl, Roman's carnival-barker father died, which forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as cleaner or waitress so that they could survive. Ruth lived in a tenement community that was poor in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. She quit school in just two years, to go into acting.
