Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn at Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jews Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. When she was a young girl, Roman's carnival-barker father died, which forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as cleaner or waitress so that they could survive. Ruth lived in a tenement community that was poor in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was educated. She quit school in just two years, to go into acting. Her journey was not without obstacles. her chosen career path. When she was in New York she was hired to take photos in a crime magazine, but no theatrical job opportunities came up. Her next job was as an "hat check" girl for a nightclub before she gave up and returned to Boston. She made ends meet by working as an usher throughout the day, and in the evening, she performed in the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. The study of drama helped her to graduate at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
